Hair transplantation is a cutting-edge hair restoration treatment that uses micrografting technology. Healthy hair follicles in the back of the scalp are carefully removed and then inserted into other areas of the scalp that are thinning. This popular procedure has a high success rate, at 90% to 95%. But how long do the results last?
The healing process after transplantation
Once the grafting process is complete and your hair follicles are newly in place in the thinning areas of your scalp, the healing process begins. This period of time can last for 6 to 12 months. During the first three months, some of your hair will fall out, which is a normal part of the healing process.
Once the healing process is complete, the transplanted follicles will begin to grow thicker hair that fills out the bald patches on your scalp. This hair will continue to grow naturally from the healthy follicles to achieve a fuller head of hair.
Are the results permanent?
The transplantation of the hair follicles is permanent. Once in place, the follicles cannot be transplanted back. The transplanted follicles will continue to produce hair as healthy hair follicles normally do. Like all hair follicles, the transplanted follicles have a lifespan, and at some point, have a chance of gradually slowing hair production.
Hair transplants are a treatment option for hair that is visibly thinning. The results of a hair transplant are considered permanent because you cannot undo them.
Are repeat treatments needed after the initial hair transplant?
Depending on the extent of hair loss and their aesthetic goals, some patients may require multiple treatments of hair transplant surgery to achieve the results that they want. In other cases, a hair transplant patient may be satisfied with their initial results, but may desire later transplants to fill out newly appearing thinning patches on their scalp.
What about the natural aging process?
While a hair transplant is a permanent procedure, the aging process can still take some effect, even on the stronger transplanted follicles from the back of your scalp. Over time, hair follicles thin, but these stronger follicles will most likely produce at least some hair for the rest of your life.
If hair thinning continues in other areas of the scalp, you will not see your hairline receding as it did before. Discuss the new hair loss pattern ahead of time with Dr. Halaas, who will design a plan to ensure your hair doesn’t look patchy or unnatural if it begins to thin in other areas during the years after your hair transplant.
