Diet and Hair Loss
Diet and Hair Loss
Good nutrition is the basis for good health–and healthy hair. A well-balanced diet can provide the vitamins and minerals necessary support our body’s machinery and regenerative functions. However, dietary deficiencies–and even some foods–can contribute to hair loss.
Hair strengthening foods. Certain vitamins and minerals–such as iron, beta carotene, and vitamins A, C, and D–help maintain healthy hair follicles. One of the most common deficiencies associated with hair loss is low iron and folate, particularly in women. To help keep your hair healthy and strong, add these power vitamin- and mineral-packed foods to your diet:
● Iron-rich foods: Bok choy and leafy greens
● Magnesium-rich foods: fish and avocados
● Foods with beta-carotene: carrots and sweet potatoes
● Vitamin D-rich foods: Eggs and greek yogurt
Foods to avoid. Foods with a high glycemic index may have a negative impact on hair growth. The glycemic index (GI) is a value that measures of the rise in blood sugar levels after eating a particular food. Foods with a high GI include:
● Drinks and foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup (fruit juices, carbonated sodas, and sweetened foods)
● White bread, pretzels, bagels
Although not fully conclusive, some studies suggest that excessive alcohol consumption may contribute to hair loss.
Hair Loss Treatments
In some cases, hair loss can be managed with growth-stimulating topical medications such as Minoxidil. Although effective, topical medication will not actually cure hair loss. To maintain the positive results, the medication must be applied to the scalp daily.
To fully restore hair, Dr. Halaas recommends hair transplants. Unlike topical liquids, a hair transplant is a permanent solution. A hair transplant involves removing healthy hair follicles the from a donor site and placing them in a bald area. A specialist in hair restoration, Dr. Halaas performs hair transplants using the most advanced techniques: Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Grafting (FUG).
