Thankfully, injectable fillers are able to address age-related volume loss in this area. Made from a hyaluronic acid base, a substance that is naturally produced by the body, these fillers work by replacing lost fat in the under eye region as patients get older.

Dr. Halaas has extensive experience in the use of under eye fillers. Dermal fillers for tear troughs are able to replenish the under eye region with youthful volume without the use of surgery. Results last up to twelve months, and procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.

What are Under Eye fillers?

Under eye fillers are a cosmetic treatment that uses hyaluronic acid-based fillers (Restylane, Juvederm, Belotero) to improve the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. These deep tear troughs are characterized by shadows that resemble dark circles.

Under-eye fillers are designed to help patients that are dealing with a sunken appearance and deep indentations. Patients with this issue may notice that blood vessels appear to sit closer to the skin’s surface, making the area look darker. Deep tear troughs also cause a separation between the cheeks and lower eyelids, giving the eyes a sunken-in look and aging the face.

The skin in this region is known for being the thinnest on the body, so great care must be taken in selecting a suitable hyaluronic acid filler solution and having it injected with gentle, skillful precision. Dr. Halaas has years of experience administering these fillers, helping her patients achieve miraculous results.

Who is a good candidate for under eye fillers?

The beauty of this non-invasive treatment is that it enables patients to avoid undergoing surgeries that reposition fat in the lower eyelid. Generally speaking, patients who meet the following criteria are good candidates for this treatment:

  • Are in good health
  • Have mild to moderate sagging under the eyes
  • Have healthy, thick skin
  • Have experienced volume loss in the under eye region
  • Have realistic expectations for the results of the treatment

What can under eye fillers address?

  • Dark circles and pronounced shadows due to under eye-volume loss
  • A hollow aesthetic in the under eye or tear trough areas, creating “deep-set eyes”
  • Strong elasticity and thickness in the skin
  • A strong and well-positioned inferior orbital rim (the bones above the cheekbones)
  • Fat pockets in the lower eyelids
  • Under eye bags that result from aging, weight loss, or genetics

What is the procedure like?

Patients have the option to sit or recline during their under eye filler treatment, which typically lasts only 10 to 20 minutes. A numbing cream is applied to the under eye region and the treatment sites are marked.

Patients don’t experience much discomfort during the treatment. One syringe is usually all that is needed, but patients with deeper tear troughs may need two or more. Following the treatment, patients must avoid exercising for at least 24 hours. Patients can get back to work and their daily routines immediately following the procedure.

Natural fillers come with the advantage of making patients look younger and revitalized without leaving obvious signs of cosmetic work.

Recovery and aftercare

Bruising and swelling following the procedure are normal and to be expected. If the patient is experiencing excessive discomfort as a result of these effects, an under eye massage can mitigate them. Patients will be provided more information about this upon discharge.

Additionally, taking steps such as using a cold and warm compress before going to bed, and sleeping with extra pillows to keep the head elevated, can both help reduce bruising.

A follow-up visit should be scheduled about two weeks after the treatment. By this time, swelling and bruising should have dissipated, and patients will have a brighter, more vibrant under eye area. The dividing line between the under eyes and the cheeks becomes more even and less noticeable.

As the effects of these treatments do wear off over time, it is recommended that patients receive maintenance treatments to keep their results long-term.
